Junior Cycle Curriculum

At CBS New Ross, we are committed to creating a vibrant culture of teaching and learning where every student is supported to achieve their personal best. As part of this commitment, our staff works closely together with students, and parents to promote innovative classroom practice, share effective learning strategies, and celebrate success across our school.

Our approach is rooted in the Junior Cycle framework, which places the student at the centre of the learning journey. Through Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs), key skills development, and active learning strategies, we aim to foster curiosity, creativity, and resilience in all our learners.

Here, you will find:

  • Our Junior Cycle CBA calendar and helpful guides for students and parents

  • Updates on whole-school initiatives in literacy, numeracy, wellbeing, and digital learning

  • Celebrations of student achievement and samples of innovative classroom work

  • Practical resources to support learning both in school and at home

What are CBAs?

As part of the Junior Cycle, students complete Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) in their subjects. These are pieces of work carried out in class, under the guidance of their teacher, which allow students to show what they can do in a practical and engaging way.

Instead of a traditional test, a CBA might involve:

  • A project or investigation

  • An oral presentation or performance

  • A written piece (e.g., creative writing, reflection, or report)

  • A portfolio of work completed over time

CBAs are important because they:

  • Give students the chance to demonstrate skills like research, communication, teamwork, and creativity

  • Provide a more rounded picture of your child’s progress and abilities

  • Help prepare students for Senior Cycle and lifelong learning

Each subject has two CBAs: one in Second Year and one in Third Year. After each CBA, students receive Feedback and a Descriptor (Exceptional, Above Expectations, In Line with Expectations, or Yet to Meet Expectations). This feedback focuses on learning and growth rather than just marks or grades.

We encourage parents/guardians to talk to students about their CBAs, ask about the work they are doing, and celebrate the skills and effort they are putting in.
